I feel compelled to write something. After all, I think it’s time to take stock of 1Obn.
I think when 1Obn was first formed, there was some sort of debate on what sort of grouping it should be. In the end, it was settled on a loose association of people whom we got to know in NS with similar interests in anime, manga, figurines and weekly LAN/movie/la-kopi/CSC/Sunshine outings.
Then we decided to have our own blog. The 1Obn blog. The blog was supposed to be set up to keep the group in touch, especially for those who have ORD-ed, and also to make it easier for major outings/events to be organised. I think I stressed at its set up that it should be a blog with free expressions, which was, in part, a carrot, I hoped, to lure people into posting more often, even though it was crappy stuff.
Fast forward to December 2006, where most of the core members ORD-ed. I remembered talking to kwok about the possibility of introducing new blood into 1Obn. I was quite against the idea then, as I felt 1Obn was not even close to being close at all, and wanted to cement the membership status of those belonging to 1Obn then. Perhaps, I mentioned, new blood could be introduced slowly, subject to the approval/veto of all 1Obn members. In the end, no new blood was recruited, partly because there weren’t any suitable candidates then. Honestly speaking, most of the forumners after us on mdf were quite laughable, really.
And now for the current state of 1Obn: The blog reflects quite clearly what has happened to the grouping. I think for quite some time now, the only person consistently posting something has been LianYL, while most of us just faded away (me included, i’m afraid to say). I’ll admit, perhaps 1Obn was just a shell for us to hide in, to huddle together during the 2 years in NS, and now that we’ve graduated from that phase, it’s no longer that important to maintain it, or to even visit it.
Granted, some of us are already in university, while most of us are working, and the choice few is still stuck in National Service. Granted, we may all have our debates/scrapes/gripes about one another from time to time, but that’s part and parcel of life, isn’t it? Granted, we may all have found new friends, new cliques, or even moved on to other more important things in life. Still, it’s quite sad to see though, that somehow, somewhere, (despite our constant denials), this friction has caused 1Obn to somehow drift into this current state. Not that its bad (to put a positive spin on it), but it could definitely be better.
Perhaps it’s time to redefine 1Obn? Or perhaps, inject new blood into 1Obn? I know, “天下无不散之宴席”, but in this modern day and age, with such advanced methods of communications, surely a movie outing for the group shouldn’t be that hard to arrange?
And of course, if you haven’t noticed till now, I’m still peeved at people who spend all their time postulating and critisizing, but do not take any action, including myself, at times. I guess it’s really time to take stock, and think if this project ought to be redefined, or be concluded.
