Rain or shine, we’re just fine
Recently, there has been and advertising blitz about an upcoming concert which went: Rain’s coming. I put the blame of the recent floods squarely on the shoulders of these people.
Yes, I am fully aware that Rain is a Korean pop star whose strongest selling point is that he is gorgeous. Apparently, as a singer, he is about as good as, oh say, F4, but his looks alone are enough to sell tickets priced as high as $488 for his concert at the Singapore Indoor Stadium in January.
What is obvious to me is that the 24 hours of non-stop rain that we had this week was a publicity stunt for Rain’s concert.
What better way to promote that Rain is coming? Okay, okay, that was a joke.
Jokes aside, I think this rain has been a good example of just how good Singaporeans have it.
Think about it.
The USA gets Hurricane Katrina. Flooding in Sri Lanka leaves thousands homeless. Our third worst rainfall in our history allows us to go fishing on Lornie Road.
Remember the earthquake in Aceh that started the killer tsunami? In Singapore, all we felt was a little tremor.
And what’s the latest major disaster which hit us? Nicoll Highway’s Collapse? With all due respect to the casualties of that disaster, which other country do you know has a major highway collapsing during the day with NO CARS on it at the time.
That naturally leaves us Singaporeans rather unprepared for any major disasters.
Tkae a good friend of mine, for instance. He once lived in Oklahoma, or what the rest of US knows as twister county.
Twisters, for those of you who missed the hit movie of the same name, are swirling winds that uproots cars, trees and houses.
So when my friend was living in Oklahoma, there was a sudden twister warning.
While every American was rushing to safety, my Singaporean friend decided to run outdoors. After surviving the experience, he gave the following interview to this reporter.
Me: “WHAT THE HELL WERE YOU THINKING?”
Friend: “That I’ve never seen a real life twister before.”
Me: “What did you see?”
Friend: “A car flying into a tree.”
Me: “At which point did you decide to run for shelter?”
Friend: “When my dog flew away.”
I suppose that many Singaporeans would have found the rain to be a nuisance over the past week. However, if we’re willing to fork out $488 to see Rain, then i reckon that we fully deserved it.
